Edible wild plant, wild food intensive held in the pristine Opal Creek watershed in the lush Santiam Canyon of central Oregon. Other locations are available. Topics covered include edible wild plants of the forest wilderness, wild foods of Native Americans, native plant identification, wild foods in wilderness survival, native roots, greens, nuts, and berries, sustainable harvesting, nutrition, processing techniques, and poisonous plants. The program can run over any 3 day period that the group and Dr. Kallas can arrange.

John Kallas, Instructor
John Kallas of Wild Food Adventures is your guide. He has a Ph.D. in nutrition and a Masters in education. John is a trained botanist, nature photographer, writer, researcher, and teacher. He's lead expeditions on wild foods for over 19 years and runs Wild Food Adventures as a full time outdoor education school. John now publishes a newsletter called the Wild Food Adventurer. You will be staying in the rustic Opal Creek Lodge with other interesting participants. A wild food library will be available for your use during the retreat.

Opal Creek Education Center Lodge is located in Jawbone Flats, an old mining town in the heart of the Opal Creek Forest. It is ideal for educational events and conferences, providing food, housing, conference facilities, and an unparalleled outdoor environment.

Tuition
$300/person based on 12 people. This provides you with the base package of the retreat with lodge accommodations and meals. Most people will be in group accommodations with beds and bunks &emdash; so bring your jamies! A limited (first come first serve) number of private rooms are available.

Tuition covers food from dinner on the first night to lunch (6 semi-vegetarian meals) on the third day, bunkhouse lodging (two nights) at historic Jawbone Flats, and meeting facilities. Wherever practical / sustainable / allowed, we will snack on, or add wild foods to our meals.

Registration
Provide the following information for everyone who is attending on your check: full names, addresses, phone (home & work), people (and phone numbers) to contact in case of emergency, note any dietary restrictions, allergies, or medical conditions that may compromise safety in an isolated wilderness environment. Detail exactly what you are paying for. Provide a sentence or brief paragraph on what you are most interested in learning at the retreat. A more detailed information packet will be sent upon receipt of registration. Call Wild Food Adventures at (503) 775-3828 if you have additional questions before that. All fees must be paid in advance 2 months before the event.

Airline or any other Long Distance Transportation
Contact Wild Food Adventures before purchasing any plane, train, or bus tickets.

Cancellation Policy (Necessary due to up-front costs for Opal Creek facilities)
100% refunded if requested by 6 weeks prior to the event date arranged.
50% refunded if requested by 4 weeks prior to the event.
25% refunded if requested by 2 weeks prior to the event..
0% refunded if requested anytime later than 2 weeks.

Restrictions: No alcohol, drugs, firearms, fire crackers, or bad attitudes.

Wild Food Adventures provides outdoor education, training, and recreation using edible wild plants through workshops, expeditions, presentations, and contracted training anywhere in North America. Emphasis is on the past, present, future and everyday uses of edible wild plants and other forageables.

Opal Creek Education Center is run by the Friends of Opal Creek, a non-profit organization that works to further the understanding and stewartship of forest ecosystems through education and research.
