HOW TO RSVP
Let us know if you are coming - send an e-mail (to
aladin@comcast.net) with the names of you and your party and how you
found out about the party. If you intend to volunteer or perform,
tell us so and include your phone number and the best time to call.
While you can just show up (in costume) without notifying us, it
helps us to plan if we know you are coming.
HELP MAKE THIS HAPPEN - IT'S FUN!
We need people to help with short stints at the door, be stage hands
during performances, and to generally facilitate events throughout
the evening. Volunteering as staff is a great way to get to know
people. Call us and volunteer to help make this event a
continuing success.
Aspiring Cabaret Performers (THIS MEANS YOU!) - Join The
Show:
Sing, do acrobatics, adult poetry or limericks, act a skit, dance,
fire dance, belly dance, fan dance, flamenco, or otherwise perform,
by yourself or with a troupe, at this years show. We are all in
on this together - we the audience are the performers. Call us
ASAP to tell us what you would like to do. Performances can be
serious, playful, a spoof, hammy, outrageous, or just a showcase of
your talent or buffoonery. The key is that if you enjoy
yourself on stage, we will enjoy what you are doing. No matter
what, you will get a supportive cheering crowd. Challenge
yourself. Be bold and adventurous.
Try to stay in the theme of a European cabaret. For instance -
Country, blue-grass, rap, funk, or R&B would be out of
place. Tend towards performances that would loosely (very
loosely) make sense in a cabaret, a circus, a theater or in the
Moulin Rouge movie. Anything in French or with a French accent
would be a bonus. Call us with your idea, whatever it is, and
we'll give you our impressions/suggestions.
Call John at 503-775-3828 or e-mail aladin@comcast.net ASAP with a
performance RSVP.

Any costume in the movie is fair game - as well as your imagination
within the theme. Check out some of the images associated with this
site and the links provided. Visit thrift, vintage, costume shops,
and Ross Dress-For-Less to rent, buy, or stimulate ideas. Adapt an
old bridesmaid dress, prom dress or party dress to be can-can "like".
Check out the fashion section of big "party stores" and costume
shops. Be elaborate and authentic or come up with a simple costume
that fits in the theme. Get together with friends on weekends before
to discuss possibilities, give each other ideas, and to share
resources. Don't delay or the date will sneak up on you! Deliberately
invest some time to make this an adventurous and memorable
experience. And if you don't invest much time, come anyway, just come
in costume.

The Movie: Rent It!

History of Le Moulin Rouge:
Since 1889, le Moulin Rouge, a Parisian Cabaret, was recognized
world-wide because of it's famous performance of the Cancan. The
Cancan was immortalized in paintings by artist Toulouse-Lautrec. The
Moulin Rouge has always presented sumptuous shows to its audience
from around the world. Dancers & performers wear costumes of
feathers, corsets, head dresses, stockings, garters, rhinestones and
sequins.
The Cancan with its dancers, the Chahuteuses (the unruly
girls), and its boisterous rhythm, brought great displeasure to the
conservative people of the day! In the Guide to Paris nights, edition
1898, the French Cancan dancers are described as an army of young
girls in Paris who dance this divine hullabaloo the way its fame
demands it... with such an elasticity when they launch their legs
upwards that we are allowed to presume that they are at least as
flexible with morals.
Carefree life, Fickleness and Joie de Vivre... Those are
the three words that could best sum up this unique period in the
History of France. It was a period of transition between two
centuries, during which the social barriers collapsed. The burgeoning
economy gave hope of a better life for all, in a rich cultural
profusion that promised fun and naughtiness. The middle-class mixed
with the riffraff. Popular culture was enchanced in a contented
disorder full of joy and vitality. In that atmosphere, which favored
artistic creativity, literary circles appeared and disappeared.
Painters and drawers got especially inspired by this joyful,
sometimes outrageous but full of fancy, atmosphere that broke
completely with the rigid classicism of that period. The atmosphere
fitted perfectly to the appearance of the first cabarets, such as le
Moulin Rouge in 1889.
